著者は，アメリカの大学・大学院を卒業・修了し，米国野村證券に勤務しているときに，911に遭遇して，ジャーナリストに転身したそうです．<\/p>\n
この本が出版されたのは，2008年で，ルポとしてはだいたい2006年頃のものです．それからアメリカの状況は，よくなっていることはないはずで，現在もこういうひどい境遇の人たちが多数いるのかと思うと，なんとも読むのが辛かったです．<\/p>\n
おおざっぱに言うと，アメリカの貧困・格差拡大は日本の多少意識の高い人たちが考えているレベルと照らしても，とんでもなくひどい状況にあると言うことです．<\/p>\n
そして，なぜ，格差拡大が改善されないか．一つには，日本にも見られますが，貧しい人たちが，そうなったのはある意味，自己責任であるという考え方が蔓延していることです．<\/p>\n
しかし，今日のアメリカでは，たった一つの病気やけがや失業で，（貧しい人たちに冷淡な側の）中の中〜上クラスの人でさえ，貧しい側に転落しかねません．<\/p>\n
もうひとつの大きな理由は，新自由主義の政治家たちと，軍事産業が一体化した軍産コングロマリットにとって，貧困拡大が都合が良いということです．貧しい人たちを戦場に送り込む仕組みができあがっています．貧しい人々を戦場に送り込むルートは正規軍に限らず，州兵，後方支援の民間企業などで，傭兵のようなものもあります．<\/p>\n
たいていの人たちは甘い言葉に半分騙されて戦場に送られて，無事に帰ってきたとしても，一時的に小金をもてるだけです．戦地で病気やけがをしたり，PTSDなどを患ったら，帰国しても前よりも窮地に追いやられることになります．<\/p>\n
このルポでは，ブッシュ(子)時代のアメリカの市民生活の荒廃をもたらす政策の数々によって，苦境に立たされた人々の声が紹介されています．<\/p>\n
オバマ政権に変わっても，議会は新自由主義の側の議員が多数派なので，悪くなる速度を遅くするのが精一杯です．<\/p>\n
