あるSNS仲間の方が，あちこちの公共の行き先表示や地名表記で，日本語と英語の表記が噛み合わない，あるいは英語の表記があまりに不適切という例を見つけてときどき投稿されているのに影響を受け，筆者も気をつけて見るようにしています．<\/p>\n\n\n\n

今日，時々行く公園で発見しました．このあたりの公園は規模に応じて，<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. 住宅街にちょこっとあってトイレも駐車場もない<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. トイレはあるけど駐車場はない<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. トイレと小規模な駐車場がある<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. トイレは複数箇所にあり，駐車場も大規模でたいてい有料<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    な感じです．本日問題の看板を見つけたのは3のレベルの公園です1<\/a><\/sup>ざっと調べたら，わが家の近所の “2” は市営で，問題の看板のある “3” の公園は県営だそうです．<\/span>．それがこの行き先案内表示です．<\/p>\n\n\n

    ほとんど汚れがついてなくて，古くても数年内くらいに更新されたものと推測されます．<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    真ん中の「南入口」の “South Entrance” は良いとしましょう．下段の「北駐車場」の “North Parking” は， “North Parking Lot” がより適切と思いますが，文字数が少なく意味は通じるのでこれも良いとしましょう．<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    問題は上段の「郷土の森」の “Center Plaza” です．まず日本語と英語が対応していないことは明らかです．「郷土の森」を自動翻訳ソフトにかければ，いくつかそれらしい英語が出てきますが，それらを担当者が気に入らなかったのでしょうか．<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    それで，郷土の森の方角に公園の真ん中の広場があるということで， “Center Plaza” と “意訳” したと推測されますが，これまたたったの単語2つなのに奇妙な言葉です． “Plaza” はもともとスペイン語で英語圏では広場やビルなどの名称としての固有名詞の一部として使われることが多いようですが，一般名詞として使われることもあるようです．もしそうなら “Central Plaza” でしょう．<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    固有名詞としてなら “Center Plaza” もありかもしれませんが，「センタープラザ」なる場所がこの公園にあるというのは見聞きしたことがありません．<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    じゃあどうすべきか．翻訳ソフトの出力する中であんまり “of” や “the” が付かないもの，例えば “Motherland Forest” でいいじゃないかと思います．<\/p>\n\n\n\n
